My Prior Knowledge of the Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games always come every four years. It’s first presented by a beautiful ceremony with thousands and thousands of people all around the world. People come together every four years to watch the athletes in their teams walking proudly, representing their team and  country. The ceremony presents the beauty of the country and what ‘Common Wealth’ means. It’s later on sung by a National Anthem. Athletes all around the world, come together as a team to compete other athletes. They represent their country in a sport they are best in and have pride.

My New Knowledge of the Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games were first held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. The games had been held  every four years since 1930 except 1942 and 1946 because of the World War ll. The Commonwealth Games are known to be a worldwide, multi-sport event. This includes the home nations of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.)

Did you know, that the Commonwealth Games have been called different names? In 1930 and 1950 the first games were called the ‘‘British Empire Games’’ and from 1954 to 1966 it was later announced as the ‘‘British Empire and Commonwealth Games.’’ From 1970 to 1974 they took on the title of British Commonwealth Games. It was the 1978 Games in Edmonton that saw this unique, world class, multi-sports event   changed its name to the Commonwealth Games.

Only six teams have attended every Commonwealth Games they are Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales. The Commonwealth Games have been known as the ‘‘Friendly Games.’’

Six sports made up the Programme of the first Commonwealth Games in Hamilton 1930; Athletics, Aquatics (Swimming & Diving),  Boxing,  Lawn Bowls, Rowing, and Wrestling. Now each candidate city looking to host a Commonwealth Games must include  10 core sports: Aquatics (Swimming), Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Squash and Weightlifting. They can choose 7 from a list of optional sports: Archery, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Canoeing, Cycling, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Softball, Synchronised Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis , Bowling, Taekwondo Triathlon, Wrestling and Gymnastics.

In 1930 the Commonwealth Games Motto was known as- ‘ Humanity-  Equality-  Destiny, now today’s Commonwealth Games 2014 it is also known to be People- Place- Passion hosting in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Queen's Baton Relay, similar to the Olympic Torch Relay, is a relay around the world held prior to the beginning of the Commonwealth Games. The Baton carries a message from the Head of the Commonwealth, currently Queen Elizabeth II. The Relay traditionally begins at Buckingham Palace in London as a part of the city's Commonwealth Day festivities. The Queen entrusts the baton to the first relay runner. At the Opening Ceremony of the Games, the final relay runner hands the baton back to the Queen or her representative, who reads the message aloud to officially open the Games

Evaluation of my Learning

In my past knowledge I only knew a minimum amount of information about the Commonwealth Games. I always thought that the Commonwealth Games  were kind of compared to the Olympics games but  slightly  different. I only knew the basic facts about the Commonwealth Games. I learnt a lot of information by group chatting with my peers, it helped me learn new things that I didn't know.  Also I got new information by researching more information about the history and growth. My knowledge just grew and grew when I just kept reading and discussing with my peers.  

Hangarau ~ Technology

When I go to Tamaki College, I learn in Digital Technology. The Maori word for technology is Hangarau. I have to use the Kiore and the Papa Patuhi to log into the Rorohiko. At school I use a Rorohiko Ponaho. We use Ipurangi to log into the Pae Tukutuku for Digital Technology’s. We have to check  the Maramataka to see what our tasks are for the day.  Sometimes our teacher sends us messages on the Imera. Sometimes our teacher uses her Waea Pukoro to give us dojo points or to take photos of us working.

Road Directions from Ruapotaka to Tamaki College

How to get to and from Ruapotaka and Tamaki College.

1. Drive down Taratoa Street, go down until you reach the end of the street.

2. Take a left turn to Torino Street and go down where a little reserve  is. Stop at a red stop sign to check for traffic.

3.  Turn left  towards to Tripoli Road. Stop and wait, taking a right turn to Erima Street.

4. Run down towards Erima Street reaching a pedestrian crossing. Now you have reached Point England School and shops.

5. Go around a roundabout going down along Elstree Ave, drive along reaching traffic lights.

6.  Drive down Elstree Ave, passing Glen Innes Aquatic Centre  and a pedestrian crossing.

7. Go down turning right around the roundabout, turn to Taniwha Street.

8. Drive down reaching the second entrance gate of Tamaki College. Stop when you arrive at Tamaki’s College Technology building.

9. Go up Taniwha Street. Stop when you reach a little shop near a curve.

10. Take a left turn heading to fenchurch Street. Go more ahead reaching a school name Glen Brae.

11. Take a left turn towards Leybourne Circle.

12. Go down the street heading for the 2nd left turn towards Overlea Road. Take a left turn, going down the street, passing Tamaki College Main Visitors entrance.

13. Pass a pedestrian crossing, heading towards a roundabout to Elstree Ave.

14. Once again, go straight up Elstree Ave, passing a pedestrian crossing, G.I Aquatics Centre.

15. Now you have reached Point England destination. Go around the roundabout straight forward to Erima Street!

16.  Go along the street, until you reached the end of it. Take a right turn to Tripoli Road.

17. Go up Tripoli Road, passing a pedestrian crossing leading directly  to Ruapotaka’s Sign Entrance.

18. Go down more Tripoli, taking a left turn to Hinaki Street. Go down Hinaki Street, taking a left turn to Torino Street.

19. Go up halfway and stop at the first turn of Torino Street on the left. Go up more and stop at, Ruapotaka Main Entrance.

20. Now You Have Reached Your Destination! 😄

What Inspires Me?

Tena koutou, Tena koutou, Tena koutou katoa,  My name is Talita.

I am 12 years old  and I go to Ruapotaka School. My favourite subjects in school are Art, Music, Writing and P.E. I like to challenge myself in these subjects trying unique techniques to learn. I also like to explore the world and people with different lifestyles!

What I love to do in my hobbies are sports, movies, hanging with my friends and probably relaxing on the summer gold sand! Appetite? Well to satisfy my appetite I like to eat, burgers, Carl's Jr, sweet treats, pies, anything with pasta and sizzling sausage sizzle! I also like Dad’s big appetite barbecue. Mmm Delicious!

In my family I have two sisters and one brother. I mostly do everything with them. I also have a cat name Renesmee, she's cuddly and warm and she's part of my family too. In my life I look up to my parents, teachers and school Principal.

  They've inspired me personally with my future.  My goal in my future is to Graduate from University, have a good job and to play Netball? I like to play lunchtime sport at school because I enjoy playing with my friends and achieving things I could not do before.
